Colin Donnell’s return to Arrow airs tonight

Tonight, Colin Donnell is trading in his Chicago Med scrubs for a superhero costume.

In Thursday’s episode of The CW‘s Arrow, Colin is returning to his breakout TV role for one more guest appearance. But this time his character Tommy Merlyn isn’t just Green Arrow’s best friend, he appears to be Green Arrow.

How that’s going to work is questionable, considering that Tommy was killed off the show at the end of Arrow season 1. So is Colin Donnell once again playing an alternate universe version of his character, as he did last season?

Or is this some kind of odd flashback or hallucination, like the way Colin portrayed Tommy during guest spots in the second and third seasons?

Needless to say, Arrow isn’t telling exactly how he is reprising his role one more time. But however he gets there, we know that Tommy Merlyn literally crashes the trial of his former best bud Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) while pretending to be Oliver’s alter-ego:

Plus, additional promotional photos released by The CW ahead of this episode, called “Docket No. 11-19-41-73,” show Tommy deep in conversation with some collaborators. So he’s obviously got a plan, and he’s got help in that plan.

And let’s not forget that the woman Tommy loved and lost to Oliver, Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy), now has her own evil doppleganger who’s working with the prosecution. So will Tommy run into this faux-Laurel and have the Band-AId ripped off that wound, assuming that either of them are bothered to recall that relationship?
