4. This isn’t the place to end

We’ve still got two more episodes in Chicago Med season 3, but based on where we stand right now, this is not where you’d want to conclude this series. And not in the typical “they’re ending this on a cliffhanger to try and get renewed” kind of way. In the “if this ends here, it would feel like an unfinished piece of work” kind of way.

This season finally got around to a few plotlines that have been percolating since the show started, most notably the romantic relationship between Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) and Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto). But these two have barely put any miles on the relationship, as the show has had them fighting over several recent episodes. It’d be dissatisfying as heck to have them finally reach that milestone and then we only get maybe half a season of seeing them really explore what that means.

Then there’s how Dr. Sarah Reese (Rachel DiPillo) has stopped worrying, committed to a career in psychiatry, and come out of her shell. Reese has developed from the newbie to the confident and question-asking character we knew she could be, but once she got over her PTSD from the events of the second-season finale, then she got tied up with her emotionally abusive father (recurring guest star Michel Gill). If the show ends here, chances are all we’re going to remember about her is what she could’ve been if we hadn’t wasted so much time with Robert.

Chicago Med has put in motion some interesting ideas this season but it hasn’t seen them through. It needs another season for these concepts and characters to finish growing; otherwise this would just feel like getting kicked out of the restaurant before the main course is done.
