Oliver Platt narrates Indianapolis 500 opening film: Watch video
Chicago Med’s Oliver Platt lent his voice to the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday; watch the 2018 Indy 500 intro narrated by the Emmy Award nominee.
The Indianapolis 500 is one of the biggest sporting events in the world, and this year it also featured one of the biggest names in One Chicago: Oliver Platt.
Chicago Med star Platt served as the celebrity narrator for the 2018 Indy 500 opening featurette, which was shown on ABC prior to the start of the Verizon IndyCar Series race on Sunday.
Every year there’s a short teaser put together to introduce the Indy 500, and it’s narrated by a different person; past celebrities with the honor have included Designated Survivor star Kiefer Sutherland (in 2006) and Prison Break‘s William Fichtner (in 2011).
These introduction films do a great job of ramping up excitement for what’s known as “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing,” and for the 102nd Indianapolis 500—the last broadcast on ABC, before the race moves to NBC next year—ABC made a fine choice in picking Oliver Platt.

Unlike Fichtner, Platt doesn’t get to appear in the intro, appropriately called “500 Miles.” But the distinctive voice of the man who plays Dr. Daniel Charles sets a perfect tone for this major event, making it sound as epic as it needs to be, but also sounding like he’s telling the audience a story and we’re just following along.
Even if you’re not an IndyCar fan or a sports fan, you’ll get a kick out of Platt serving as the narrator of a beautifully shot mini-movie. It just proves that he can literally say anything and make it compelling. It’s also a nice bonus for One Chicago fans as we’re less than two weeks removed from that Chicago Med season 3 cliffhanger involving Dr. Charles.
