One Chicago relationship health check: Which couples still exist?

Burgess and Ruzek, Chicago PD

RELATIONSHIP STATUS: UNKNOWN

Status update: We expected to see some movement for Burzek in Chicago PD season 5, since the previous season had teased One Chicago viewers with Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) planting that kiss on his ex-fiancee Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) when he came back from his undercover gig—you know, the one he took because he was freaked out about having to work next to her every day.

There was indeed a development, but not nearly as significant as we expected. After Burgess’s relationship with prosecutor Matt Miller (Zach Appelman) ended when she chose her case over Matt’s case, she and Ruzek later wound up going home together for a one-night stand. And that was the sum total of what happened for them this season.

Most of Ruzek’s screen time in the latest Chicago PD season was devoted to how he got stuck in the middle between Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) and Denny Woods (Mykelti Williamson). He was too busy worrying about either being caught or being killed to heat things up with Burgess.

Still, it’s surprising that the show didn’t do something more with their ship, given that it’s the only one Chicago PD has anymore after the demise of Linstead. Chalk this plotline up as something else that got subjugated by the season long Voight vs. Woods battle royale, and let’s hope that the next season gives some much-deserved clarity to their relationship status.
