The 5 best Chicago Med season 3 episodes
1. Over Troubled Water
When we look back on Chicago Med season 3, we’re going to look back first at “Over Troubled Water” because it was everything we wanted out of this season. While other episodes aspired to things they didn’t always reach, this one delivered and showed the full potential of the season.
This was the other episode where we understood, and really enjoyed, the dynamic between Ava and Connor. We not only saw them disagree and didn’t know who we should agree with, but we saw them work together as a cohesive team, too—and that’s important because so much of what they did was argue and bicker. “Over Troubled Water” made their dynamic feel so much more well developed, and thus so much more interesting.
The scenes where their only choice is to amputate a limb from a trapped worker were truly nail-biting, not to mention exciting because we were getting to see both of them in action outside of the hospital (particularly Ava, who hadn’t done that before):
“Over Troubled Water” also finally gave a storyline to Goodwin that wasn’t about running the hospital. This was the episode that brought back her ex-husband Bert (Greg Alan Williams) and his new girlfriend Lyla (Garcelle Beauvais), and it wound wind up being the last time we saw Lyla.
Goodwin is generally somewhat limited in the storylines she gets, and the Lyla storyline had taken a huge turn in last season’s “CTRL ALT” so it was great to see Chicago Med revisit that. It also was a storyline that tugged at our heartstrings, even with knowing Bert’s history.
This was Med at its emotional best, and one of the few episodes this season that we still thought about well after it was over. With that in mind, there’s no doubt that it’s the best episode of the third season, because it did what the best episodes of the whole series have done—transcend the week, or the season, and become something a whole lot more.
