3. Connor and Robin, Chicago Med

Dr. Robin Charles (Mekia Cox) was specifically introduced in Chicago Med season 2 to be the new love interest for Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell). Such pre-planned couples often feel forced, but these two won us over before One Chicago ripped out our heartstrings by pushing them aside.

It took us a while to warm up to Robin, because just because a character is written to be a love interest doesn’t mean we actually believe they should get together. There was also the added complication of her being Dr. Daniel Charles’ (Oliver Platt) estranged daughter. For a while, this felt like another workplace romance.

But then it became clear that Robin was not okay, and that’s when Chicago Med really took off. It transformed a pretty regular ship into an important mental health storyline with truly phenomenal work from both Mekia Cox and Colin Donnell. It was a perfect storyline for Connor given his history with his mother’s mental health issues, and we genuinely worried about Robin’s safety in some of the scariest scenes of the season.

Luckily, Robin turned out to be okay when Dr. Sarah Reese (Rachel DiPillo) found out what was really going on with her. But Chicago Med was already looking past her. In the same episode that Connor was worrying about Robin’s surgery, the show introduced Dr. Ava Bekker (Norma Kuhling) and had her making oddly flirty comments toward him.

Robin returned in Chicago Med season 3, but mostly just to cause problems Connor had to fix, and eventually left Chicago without saying goodbye. Five episodes later, Connor and Ava were getting into bed together.

It’s a real shame, because with Connor and Robin, One Chicago had a couple who not only worked as a ship but had an important and interesting story to tell. The exploration of mental health issues, and also what that meant for Connor, had so much depth and the chemistry between the actors really did get better as they went on.

It hurt not only to see Connor hurt so badly, and to see Robin feel like she had no choice but to leave him, but also to see the show throw away all that story potential in order to have Connor embark upon his third workplace romance in three seasons.
