1. Dawson and Casey, Chicago Fire

This one hasn’t happened yet, but we’re giving it the top spot on our list because when it does, there won’t be any breakup more painful than watching One Chicago’s first couple go down in, well, flames.

Like Linstead, the demise of Dawsey is motivated by an off-screen departure, as Monica Raymund won’t be returning as Gabriela Dawson in Chicago Fire season 7. We have no idea yet how she’ll be written out, but that almost certainly mandates an end to Casey and Dawson’s marriage, and as we have discussed previously, there’s definitely no way that ends well.

There’s a chance Chicago Fire could have the couple stay together despite us never seeing one of them, but that’s a storytelling hurdle One Chicago doesn’t seem inclined to deal with (or it could have done that for Linstead). So Dawson and Casey seem to be on the back end of their ship, even though they just got married a season and a half ago.

Does Dawson go to Puerto Rico and give Casey the kiss-off? Does Chicago Fire kill her off, even though that’s what it did to the last woman he was engaged to? Either way, this is a change that will probably severely mess Casey up—not to mention the One Chicago audience, who have put six seasons into rooting for these two.

Given how much of Chicago Fire involved Dawsey in some way, there’s no way that this won’t leave a large portion of the fan base in a giant heartbroken puddle. But maybe it’s fitting that the biggest breakup in One Chicago history comes from the biggest couple the fandom has ever seen and probably will ever have.
