Former Chicago Fire star Teri Reeves celebrates her birthday today, so we’re celebrating her character Hallie Thomas and telling you where she is now.

Today we’re saying happy birthday to Chicago Fire alum Teri Reeves, who played the ill-fated first fiancee of Matthew Casey, Dr. Hallie Thomas.

Teri was billed as a series regular during Chicago Fire season 1, but her character didn’t make it through the season. She was killed off in a medical clinic fire, and Casey (Jesse Spencer) went on to marry Gabriela Dawson (Monica Raymund).

In that sense, Hallie may have been one of the show’s most underused characters. She and Casey had broken their engagement before the series started, but quickly got back together, yet the first season was already introducing Dawson’s feelings for Casey.

Hallie, meanwhile, had plenty of other things to deal with. She left Chicago at one point and came back, got to flush planted cocaine down the toilet during Casey’s battle with Hank Voight (Jason Beghe), and then of course there was her tragic demise:

What has Teri Reeves been up to since her dramatic exit from Chicago Fire? You haven’t seen her on TV as much, but she’s actually been quite busy working on a number of projects.

The bulk of her work has been in film over the last five years, both short films and feature films. Yet she’s also filmed guest appearances on ABC‘s Once Upon A Time (as Dorothy Gale from The Wizard of Oz fame), Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and Castle. Her most recent small-screen credit is playing Marlena in The Punisher season 2 premiere for Netflix.

Though Teri Reeves obviously can’t return to Firehouse 51 given her character’s fate, it’s still worth appreciating her contribution to the show; she gave us some backstory for Casey and was the one main character who wasn’t part of the firehouse. That’s a perspective that we haven’t had since, as no other series regular has been a civilian over the subsequent five seasons.

It felt like we hardly knew Hallie and there was a lot more story to tell with her, and we’d still be glad if there was some way to bring Teri back in a role on one of the other series (hey, it’s been done before). She’s a talented actress whom we haven’t seen the best of yet, and we’ll be rooting for her in everything she does next. Happy birthday, Teri Reeves!
