Look back at where Chicago Justice began this summer. Read our retrospective as we rewatch Chicago Justice season 1, episode 9.

Over the One Chicago summer break, we’re looking back at where it all began by rewatching the first seasons of our shows—and today we’re revisiting Chicago Justice season 1, episode 9.

If you want to rewatch this episode along with us, you can find Chicago Justice season 1 on iTunes and DVD.

“Comma” is Chicago Justice‘s discussion of the Second Amendment and gun control, after a young woman dies during a college night out gone wrong. One of her classmates is the first suspect but is it just because she’s recently been acquitted of another murder?

This is a slightly polarizing episode, if only because the gun control and gun violence discussion is one of the most polarizing topics in criminal justice, and has only become more prominent since the airing of this episode last April.

It also deals with the concept of “guilty until proven innocent,” as Abigail Chapman’s prior trial does color the perception of her in this case and it’s up to our heroes at the State’s Attorney’s Office to look past that and find out the truth.

The deeper “Comma” goes, it also mixes in politics (the victim’s father is a major political donor) and college politics (as the show explores the on-campus connections between the victim, the suspect and everyone else involved).

The whole thing is a big mess, with all kinds of grey areas, and at one point there’s even a whole discussion about proper grammar. It’s a melting pot of an episode and some aspects of it work better than others, but it takes this important issue head-on while also delivering a piece of TV entertainment.

After a couple of hard-hitting episodes, Chicago Justice eases up on the throttle slightly with the events of “Comma.” It’s not as compelling as its predecessor “Lily’s Law” but it at least provides some food for thought, and there are some honest plot twists in there amongst the ones that you see coming. Watch this episode again on iTunes and DVD.
