1. Reese’s father

The unquestioned villain of the season was Robert Haywood (recurring guest star Michel Gill), the estranged father of Dr. Sarah Reese (Rachel DiPillo). Robert turned up seemingly wanting to make amends with his daughter, but became an insufferable presence not only for her, but for the whole show.

The casting of Michel Gill was great; one needs only to watch his work on House of Cards to see what a good actor he is. And the idea of Reese connecting with her dad had potential for her, since past seasons had established she didn’t have a great relationship with either parent. It could have brought out important backstory and also been wonderful character development.

But instead, what we got was Robert and Dr. Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt) battling with Reese in the balance like something to be won, while Robert turned out to be a killer. That was a plot twist that should’ve been on Chicago PD, not Chicago Med. And Reese wound up being largely a prop in her own story, up and until the season-ending cliffhanger.

This storyline didn’t fit the show at all, wasn’t written well and went on too long. But it also had the cardinal sin of TV shows: it made us want to stop watching. Robert wasn’t a bad guy we loved to hate; he was a character we just wanted off our screens, and away from Reese and Charles. If Chicago Med season 4 has any sense, it will confirm that he’s dead and move on from all this. We all deserve better.
