4. Robin Charles on Chicago Med

Robin Charles (Mekia Cox) may have only been a recurring character on Chicago Med, but the way her departure was handled—after so much went into building up her storyline during the second season—made her exit incredibly disappointing.

It took One Chicago fans a little while to warm up to Robin when she was introduced as a new love interest for Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell) during Chicago Med season 2, but she did grow on the audience. And beyond that, her story became a compelling arc about mental illness and how it can affect not only the person but everyone around them.

However, the show wasn’t as in love with Robin as we were. In the very same episode that she was recovering, it introduced Dr. Ava Bekker (Norma Kuhling) and it was obvious that Ava was the next romantic foil for Connor. By Chicago Med season 3, Ava had been made a series regular, and Robin was relegated to just causing trouble for Connor—whether it was accidentally setting a fire in his apartment or being caught shoplifting.

She went from a character with a great, full story arc to a problem to be handled, and it was no surprise when the series had her break up with Connor and leave town.

To be fair, we don’t know if the series lost Mekia Cox when she was named a series regular on Once Upon A Time, or if she moved on because Chicago Med was writing her out. Given how Ava was introduced when Robin’s story was still going on, it feels like the latter. Either way, how we said goodbye to Robin was sad for how much potential was wasted.

She deserved better writing that allowed her to feel like the center of her own story, and not just as if the show was getting past her to pave the way for her boyfriend’s next romance. Hopefully she’s doing great where she is now.
