Chicago Med season 4 character preview: Daniel Charles
Where we left off
After ending the previous season with a cliffhanger, Charles also finished Chicago Med‘s third season with a cliffhanger! Except this time it wasn’t about whether he would live or die—it was about whether Robert Haywood would live or die, after Charles hesitated to help him following a heart attack.
Charles had mostly recovered from his own injuries when the third season started, thanks to a time jump (which was required thanks to NBC’s moving the show to midseason). Instead, what should’ve been his story became Reese’s story, as Charles had to help Reese confront her fear, anger and other emotions toward what had happened to him.
In the second half of the season, Robert returned trying to insinuate himself into Reese’s life, as he had become ill and was looking for his estranged daughter to take care of him. Charles met him and quickly diagnosed him with a mental issue on top of his physical one—but the concept of doctor-patient confidentiality kept him from telling Sarah.
Still, Charles continued to poke around Robert’s history, while Robert sensed Charles’ closeness to Reese and began to find ways to drive them apart. Charles eventually discovered that Robert had killed at least one college student, which led him to think twice about saving him when Robert fell onto the floor at the end of the season finale. Hey, we would have hesitated, too.
