Where we left off

Hank Voight’s storyline dominated Chicago PD season 5. His former partner Denny Woods, who had been introduced in the season 4 episode “Grasping For Salvation”, came back this past cycle determined to make Voight pay. Somehow appointed to investigate Intelligence despite being a proven dirty cop after that episode, Woods began a campaign against Voight that lasted the whole season.

This season-long storytelling meant that Voight had to go through a number of false starts and near misses before he finally defeated Woods (predictably in the final minutes of the season’s last episode). In “Homecoming” after some help from another old friend, Assistant State’s Attorney James Osha (Michael McGrady), Voight saw Woods put in handcuffs.

But Voight also suffered the worst possible loss at the end of the season. Before his arrest Woods had gotten Olinsky indicted for the murder of Jason Bingham—the man Voight killed at the end of season 3, after Bingham had murdered his son Justin. While in prison, Olinsky was stabbed, and he died of his injuries.

While Olinsky’s death had no direct connection to Voight, Voight still felt responsible for the loss of his best friend. The season ended with a clearly devastated Hank Voight having a breakdown on a rooftop.
