3. His relationship with his siblings

Kevin Atwater’s relationship with his siblings is one of the most important aspects of who he is. He has shown that he’ll look out for them through anything, and that they are the most important thing in his life. Atwater will do anything to protect them, and perhaps joining the police force was a way for him to protect both of them.

Which begs the question: Where are their parents? Or, for that matter, anyone else in Atwater’s family?

After five seasons of Chicago PD, one of the few things that has never really been explained is why Atwater is the guardian of his two siblings. They’ve appeared in a few episodes, with his younger brother Jordan being in the wrong place at the wrong time during both season 4 (“Big Friends, Big Enemies”) and season 5 (“Snitch”).

However, the show has never gone into detail about how Kevin came to be both big brother and surrogate parent. Neither he, nor his siblings, have mentioned their parents and the series hasn’t shown any of their family members. We’ve met Kim Burgess’s sister, Jay Halstead’s brother and dad, Alvin Olinsky and Hank Voight’s children—but we don’t know much about the Atwaters.

With Chicago PD season 6 just around the corner, we hope the writers have finally decided to give us a little more regarding Atwater’s family history and how he came to be a guardian. It’s time to fill in those blanks that would give us a lot more clarity about where he came from and how he is the character we love so much. At this point, there’s no reason not to give him the same backstory that nearly every other character has been afforded.
