Where we left off

The fifth season was an interesting one for Kim Burgess, though it was kind of hit or miss. With the departure of Erin Lindsay, Burgess has become the show’s sort of de facto female lead, being the next most tenured female character within Voight’s unit—even though she’s only been in the Intelligence Unit for a season and a half!

But because of that cast shuffle, Burgess got to be more prominent in a number of cases, which was excellent to see as Marina Squerciati turned in some excellent performances. Some backstory came out in “The Thing About Heroes” where the prime suspect was an officer whom Burgess had apparently trained while still on patrol; he was innocent, but committed suicide anyway.

Her personal life continued to intermingle with her professional one, and continued to be a mess. In that same episode she mentioned a new boyfriend, who turned out to be a prosecutor named Matt Miller (guest star Zach Appelman). However, when Burgess screwed up one of his cases to protect one of the team’s cases, he dumped her.

Burgess then had a one-night stand with her ex-fiance Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) at the end of a later episode, but the subject was never broached again, so Chicago PD left the couple in limbo for the second consecutive season. Will Burzek fans finally get answers in season 6?
