What will happen

Christopher Herrmann falls into the category of One Chicago supporting characters—those who, while great, primarily get written as supporting players in other people’s storylines. They’ll get the occasional main story in an episode, and they steal plenty of scenes, but they don’t have the same amount of attention paid to them as the stars.

So don’t expect that Herrmann is going to have a significant storyline right away. There’s too much happening with the other characters, whether it’s Casey dealing with his wife’s absence or all the fallout of Grissom taking over as fire commissioner. Those plotlines have to be resolved first, and then Chicago Fire will catch us up with Herrmann.

When it does, look for things to be on a relatively normal path for our favorite cantankerous team member. He’ll be around to be confused at the latest crazy idea pitched for Molly’s, or to lay down the law if somebody needs an attitude check, and participate in the subplots that flesh out every episode.

Hopefully there’s a featured episode for Herrmann in the middle of the season, and one that does not involve him getting stabbed, stuck in a burning building, otherwise injured or having someone near him killed. He’s due for some rest and relaxation.
