Law and Order SVU ratings report: Week of November 1
How did this week’s Law and Order SVU season 20 episode do in the TV ratings? Here’s the Nov. 1 edition of the SVU Ratings Report.
With the 20th season of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit season continuing, it’s time for another look at the Dick Wolf series’ TV ratings with the SVU Ratings Report.
Thursday’s episode “Caretaker” brought in 4.54 million live viewers. That’s a second straight week of improvement. From last week’s 4.16 to 4.54 is almost 400,000 more people that were tuned in.
Its 0.9 share in the adults 18-49 demographic was even with last week’s episode.
SVU ranked 10th out of 17 broadcast TV shows that aired on Thursday night, so while it’s gaining viewers, it’s not moving up in the rankings. Instead, it looks like TV shows benefited from a weak Thursday Night Football game.
This week’s Thursday Night Football game was a matchup between two teams that have losing records: the Oakland Raiders and San Francisco 49ers. It wasn’t an attractive contest, so where NFL football normally dominates the night, it only came in fourth in total viewers.
How did SVU season 20 stack up against its direct competition? It’s back in the middle of the pack. CBS won the 10 p.m. hour with SWAT (5.24 million) but Special Victims Unit once again was ahead of ABC‘s How To Get Away With Murder (2.91 million).

Thus, Olivia Benson and company find themselves in an interesting quandary. They’re picking up more people watching live, but because those viewers don’t appear to be coming from other TV shows, this one isn’t actually getting ahead.
The show is on the right track, though, so the best fans can hope for is that the audience continues to grow—and that eventually that growth will beat the consistent numbers of its competitors.
