The next Law & Order: SVU is about to rake one of the show’s own over the coals, according to NBC‘s official description of Thursday’s episode and the promo spot they’ve released for it.
Thursday’s installment “Mea Culpa” involves Peter Stone (Philip Winchester) being accused of sexual assault by someone he knew previously. People who remember how Stone was written on Chicago Justice will be aware that this is out of character for him—so how is this episode going to play it out? Are we about to learn something about Peter Stone that we don’t like?
The episode will at least provide more facts about the character’s backstory, since his accuser (played by Alexandra Breckenridge, This Is Us) isn’t someone he met recently. Is she an ex-girlfriend? An ex-colleague? Someone who’s using the system to try and tear him down? It wouldn’t be the first time someone has made it personal with Stone, considering last season’s finale had his sister killed to keep him from prosecuting a case.
But this episode has a lot of uncertainty surrounding it, and it will be worth watching to see what it does with this surprising plotline. Plus, it’s directed by Mariska Hargitay.
