What each One Chicago show has us thankful for
Last but certainly not least, we’re thankful that Chicago PD gave us what One Chicago viewers have been asking for: an episode centered on Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins)! The most recent episode “Black and Blue” had Atwater front and center, and it was very much appreciated.
There’s no argument that Kevin Atwater is the show’s most underused character. He gets about one good episode a season. But despite that, he’s one of the most beloved One Chicago heroes. It is very easy to love Atwater—he’s got a huge heart, and he is just as concerned about the people of Chicago as he is about his teammates in the Intelligence Unit. He’s calm, cool and collected, and he adores his family, too. What’s not to love?
Yet Chicago PD is more likely to use him as a supporting character than to give him the spotlight, and when the show does focus on Atwater, it’s usually not good for him. He’s been charged with a crime, had his siblings sent out of state, and gotten abducted in the last three Atwater-centric stories. So it’s been frustrating for One Chicago enthusiasts to see a great character who either is not getting enough screen time, or is having his screen time turn out horribly.
“Black and Blue” didn’t really have a happy ending either, with his new love interest Laila (Milauna Jemai Jackson) being taken away in the back of a squad car. But before that, we got to see Atwater finally have a love interest. We saw some great scenes where he had to struggle with loyalty to his badge versus what he wanted to do. We enjoyed two excellent performances.
So many reasons why Kevin Atwater is a great character were featured in this episode, and we’re thankful that he got that attention. Now we’re hoping it won’t be the last time Chicago PD season 6 lets him be the hero.
We’d like to wish all One Chicago fans a happy and safe Thanksgiving. Enjoy the holiday, and we’ll see you back here for the rest of the One Chicago season!
