As Chicago Med takes its midseason break, it’s time to ask: what parts of Chicago Med season 4 worked, what didn’t, and what’s coming next?

The new season of Chicago Med has reached its halfway point, which means it’s time for only one thing: our annual midseason report card!

The fourth season has been a roller coaster of sorts so far. Characters have left the hospital, both voluntarily and involuntarily. Other people have joined the team even though some of them we’d like to see leave already. Couples have broken up, gotten back together, and attempted to have a wedding.

So what should fans make of all this? There have been highs, lows and questions throughout the first half of the season, and this report card is where we discuss them all.

We’re going to walk you through the parts of the first half that worked best and the ones that did not quite work out. Then last but not least, we’ll give you our opinions on what could happen next based on what we’ve seen in the first nine episodes. Starting with:

What worked

Dr. Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt) seemed to be in big trouble when the season premiere had protege and surrogate daughter Dr. Sarah Reese (Rachel DiPillo) quitting, but the plot twist has worked out better than expected. Not to take anything away from DiPillo or her character, but it’s pretty impressive that Chicago Med could go from writing Charles almost exclusively with Reese to writing him on his own, and not really miss a beat.

Introducing the hybrid OR masterminded by Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell) gave Chicago Med an aspect that’s different from other medical dramas. It also provided a new opportunity for the character of Maggie Lockwood (Marlyne Barrett), who’s working part-time on the surgical team. More Maggie is always a good thing.

Adding critically acclaimed actress and singer Heather Headley to the cast was a massive plus. Her character Gwen Garrett may be frustrating and morally questionable, but there’s no doubt that the actress is fantastic and needs to be used more in the second half of the season.
