Chicago PD season 6: Ranking the biggest moments so far
2) Ruzek and Upton hook up
What happened: When Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) was distraught about nearly losing another partner, Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) offered to take her out for a drink. The next episode revealed that things had progressed to a drunken one-night stand. And even though Upton insisted that’s exactly what it was, before the end of the episode she was having sex with Ruzek again. The two are still together.
The episode: “Bad Boys” (episode 4)
Why it’s important: No one saw a Ruzek and Upton pairing coming. Nobody except the writers of Chicago PD, who turned right when they’d spent two seasons going left. It was an honest surprise for Ruzek to move on after he’d had a one-night stand with former fiancee Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) last season and kissed her the season before that. Every sign pointed to Burzek until they didn’t anymore.
It’s clear that Chicago PD is fully invested in Upton and Ruzek as their new primary ship, and it’s been interesting to see how that’s developed. There’s been the good parts (Ruzek supporting his new girlfriend after she revealed a painful childhood secret) and the not so good (him trying to get her to move in together already). It has potential, but because of the way it was executed, it still feels jarring, too.
(And Upton doesn’t seem like the person who’d get drunk and have random sex. She was always presented as having her feet firmly on the ground. Yes, she was upset and not thinking at her best, but acting rashly would’ve been more appropriate for Erin Lindsay than Upton.)
Regardless of which side of the shipping fence you’re on, you can’t argue that the show got tons of buzz out of this. Burzek fans are upset that it happened. Other fans are getting on board with the idea. Still others are still trying to figure it out. But it’s hard to talk about Chicago PD season 6 now without talking about Ruzek, Upton and their fling turned relationship, too.
