What’s next

One aspect that Chicago PD hinted at with that infamous fight scene was Atwater’s place as the glue of the Intelligence Unit. He’s the guy who will break up the fight between teammates. He’s the one who will make peace with the community. He’s the shoulder everyone else can lean on. It’s an integral part of his character, and it works so well because LaRoyce Hawkins himself is such a warm, kind-hearted individual. So why not utilize that in the rest of Chicago PD season 6?

This unit is in emotional shambles, or at least it should be. Voight was suicidal at the start of the season. Halstead was shot and nearly killed. Upton revealed a painful memory from her childhood. What this team could appreciate right now is somebody who helps them through all that, or at the least, just offers a hug and some positive words. That’s what Atwater is best at. He can help put this team back together.

Something else that could be addressed here is why Atwater hasn’t gotten more public attention. Remember last season when Intelligence went through all that drama with Halstead’s shooting and the whole “white cop vs. black community” stuff Ray Price wanted to stir up? Atwater is the antithesis to that criticism. Especially as Chicago PD is talking about optics, and politics, why not point out this same unit has an outstanding officer in it who happens to be African-American?

It would also tell us whether or not Atwater’s public image suffered any blowback from the legal issues he went through on Chicago Justice. That was never addressed, and it’s a shame if that’s the only public attention Kevin Atwater gets. He deserves a commendation at this point with all he’s been through!
