What’s next

With Brett and Foster having gotten the “getting to know you” out of the way, at least most of it, Brett’s plot possibilities should open up in the second half of Chicago Fire season 7. There’s only so long the writers can have her being confused or surprised by something Foster has done.

Foster’s had her chance to do some crazy stuff in the first nine episodes (like her emergency in the field surgery), so when will Brett have her next miracle moment? The core group of characters usually all have some big moment during the season, so look for Brett to have a big case of her own in the back 13—whether it’s pulling off a risky procedure in one cool scene or a story that spans the entire episode.

And with Stellaride being on the outs in the midseason finale, and Casey and Naomi being on fire, this would be an opportune time for the show to push the Brett and Kyle ship out to sea. There is always at least one shipper storyline going on, and with the other two in bad situations it would be an obvious and welcome contrast to focus on the new couple.

There’s no saying if they’ll last, since Teddy Sears is just a recurring cast member. But with Kyle’s connections to both Foster and Brett, he’s set up perfectly to recur not just this season but in the future, too. There’s easy ways to keep working him into their stories going forward. So there is room for cautious optimism.

And that’s kind of fitting, because that phrase could describe Brett—almost always an optimist, but understandably cautious about all these things that are changing in her life. Now it’s time for her to stabilize it all and settle into her new reality.
