Chicago Med season 4 midseason report: Ava Bekker
What’s next
Ava’s two primary plot points—being uncovered as the person who got Cornelius Rhodes to fund the hybrid OR and getting back together with Connor—were both resolved in the first half of this season, so the rest of Chicago Med season 4 is a great time to expand her character.
There hasn’t been an Ava-centric episode yet, and there hasn’t been since the middle of season 3 when we met her mentor (a perfectly annoying Malcolm McDowell). We know nothing about her life outside of her career. Given that she’s from South Africa it may not be as easy to work in some backstory, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t ways to do it.
She can have a patient whom she connects with—somebody who prompts her to talk about her history, either with them or with the other doctors she’s working alongside. Does she have other friends in Chicago outside of the hospital and one of them can be a patient? That’s happened on this show all the time, like when Connor’s sister brought her husband-to-be in after a chandelier fell on him during the first season.
What would be awesome, though implausible, is to see how Ava is working without Connor. We have seen how Connor is now functioning without her in the hybrid OR, but we haven’t seen her tackle a cardiothoracic surgery case without him. It’d be great to see her stand on her own and perhaps even have Dr. Isidore Latham work with her or comment on her progress.
But with Ato Essandoh now a series regular on a CBS show, his availability has been limited for Chicago Med. Still, let’s tell more of Ava’s story and not just Ava and Connor’s story. That’s the key to making her a fan favorite.
