What’s happened so far

After Jay Halstead got run through the wringer last season on Chicago PD, you’d think that the show would take it easier on him during the sixth season. That hasn’t been the case.

The franchise made the unfortunate decision to kill off Jay’s father Pat Halstead (recurring guest star Louis Herthum) during the One Chicago crossover event in the second week of the season. It was particularly troubling for Jay, because the last interaction he had with his father was getting into a fight.

To make matters worse, Jay’s subsequent obsession with catching the man who started the fire responsible for Pat’s death led to him not only getting in trouble at work—but getting shot and nearly killed.

Five episodes later in “Trigger,” he found himself at gunpoint again when tracking down a fellow Army Ranger turned perpetrator. Though Halstead was able to successfully handle the situation and save the day, it also clearly shook him that he misjudged the other ex-soldier so badly and that the man had fallen that far.

Plus, Jay has been a recurring character on Chicago Med as his brother has been working within a joint police and FBI task force. Jay’s last appearance was driving his brother to witness protection. Will he continue to do double duty in the second half of the season?
