What’s happened so far

Kelly Severide’s storylines have really driven the first half of Chicago Fire season 7. His romantic relationship with Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) is now the show’s primary ship, so it’s gotten a lot of screen time—and a lot of drama.

First, Severide had to worry over Stella when she was hospitalized during the first part of the One Chicago crossover. Then he developed jealousy issues when her high school best friend Tyler (Tye White) came to Firehouse 51; those issues came to a head in the midseason finale, after Tyler told Stella and then Stella confronted Severide about the tension between them.

The two argued, which led to Severide sitting on the couch in his apartment alone while Stella was last seen having drinks with Tyler. Presumably, Severide and Stella will still be on the rocks when new episodes begin in January.

But that wasn’t all he had to struggle with. Just as Severide seemed to make peace with his father, Chicago Fire killed off Benny Severide (Treat Willliams) off-screen. Benny had a stroke, dying just 20 minutes before his son made it to the hospital.

That left Kelly dealing with losing his dad, while knowing that Benny’s final act had been to help Firehouse 51 get rid of Jerry Gorsch (as explained in the scene you can rewatch by playing the video below). He wouldn’t be able to thank Benny for doing what no one else had been able to.
