Chicago Fire season 7 midseason report: Kelly Severide

What’s next

With the Chicago Fire midseason premiere picking up right where the action left off, Severide will have to address his relationship with Stella immediately. Either he’ll make up with her by the end of the first episode back, or they’ll end up on some kind of break—and will the show go that far, since its only other current ship is Casey and Naomi, and fans don’t care about that nearly as much as they do Stellaride?

But the rest of this season would be a good opportunity to address the couple of issues that he’s accumulated over the years. Kelly Severide is complicated in more ways than one, but the show doesn’t always go into that—instead he usually ends up at the bottom of a bottle or with another girlfriend. The latter is obviously not an option anymore.

With Carl Grissom returning later this season, will Severide confront Grissom again and deal with having his former mentor turn into an enemy? Will we see more of his half-sister and his mother, and maybe develop those relationships further? How much will his father’s death affect him in the long run, or will the show not address it past the memorial episode?

There are a couple different options here that could add more depth to Severide’s character and explore more than just his relationship with Stella. It just depends on what the writers want his (or their) focus to be. The seventh season could be a turning point for him where he finally unpacks some of his baggage for good.
