What’s happened so far

The majority of April Sexton’s storyline in this season of Chicago Med has been the aftermath of her storyline last season. April kept to her word and broke up with Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) when he stood by his sister Emily (recurring guest star Arden Cho), though it took fans a while to figure that out—since April and Ethan were mostly seen together in scenes anyway and their no longer being a couple wasn’t directly referenced until several episodes into the season.

But despite breaking up with Ethan over Emily, April supported Emily when she revealed that she was pregnant, and helped her navigate her various personal problems up until Emily and her new boyfriend Bernie headed to Las Vegas.

It was no shocker that when Choi was exposed to a lethal chemical, April was the one to risk her life in order to save his. She rushed into a contaminated hospital to get the drug he needed, and came out unscathed—both physically and in terms of getting into any trouble!

Professionally, April got sort of promoted this year when she had to take over the role of charge nurse while Maggie Lockwood (Marlyne Barrett) was in surgery. April and Maggie briefly butted heads when April’s way of doing things wasn’t up to Maggie’s standards.

And April had one of the most heartbreaking storylines on Chicago Med in a long time, when she helped with a baby who was doomed to die shortly after being born. While the baby’s parents fled the hospital and abandoned their child rather than face that sad ending, April stayed with the baby to the end, making her (and audiences) cry.
