Chicago Med season 4 midseason report: April Sexton

What’s next

If the Chexton storyline plays out like past Chicago Med storylines, things will get more serious for Choi and Vicki before he eventually finds his way back to April. There’s no reason for him not to; it’s clear the show prefers to ship its series regulars with other regulars, and Yaya DaCosta and Brian Tee have developed a strong chemistry (just watch this behind-the-scenes video).

But like Natalie, the show has to be careful not to use so much time on her relationship that she doesn’t get storylines elsewhere, too. April’s relationship with Choi has definitely grown since they got together last season, but there’s more to her than that, too.

The question mark hanging over her depends on what happens with Maggie, though. April can’t get more experience as the charge nurse if the show doesn’t explore Maggie’s new line of work in the hybrid OR further. So that’s a decision the writers have to make.

What about pairing April with other doctors on procedures, too? She almost always works with Choi, but there’s no reason she couldn’t do a case or two with Will, or Natalie, or anybody else. It would probably do the two of them good to put some distance between themselves for a while, while they work out their personal status.

April is a veteran nurse at this point, so it’s time for her to get more responsibility, start calling more shots, and move forward. Remember the episode where the team were trying to train a new nurse? How about another one of those? After all, there are new med students, so there could be new nurses. Or anything else that would challenge her.
