Chicago Fire’s characters made some life choices this week. Find out what happened in Chicago Fire season 7, episode 11 in our recap.

This week’s Chicago Fire was an episode with decisions to be made and business to be taken care of. And not the usual Firehouse 51 business, but the kind of stuff that you reflect on well after it’s happened.

Wednesday’s installment “You Choose” saw Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer) try to move on after last week’s midseason premiere, while Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) dished out some parenting to a kid that wasn’t his. We all knew his storyline wasn’t just about a boat! Plus, Tuesday got his own plotline, because adorable animals are an excellent way to diffuse angst.

Casey and Brett

Casey was down both an apartment and a girlfriend, after his place burned down and Naomi had decided to leave the country last week. Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) offered to use her many hours of HGTV viewing experience to find him a new home. She even had spreadsheets! But Casey felt he needed to stay with Severide, just to look out for him awhile. Awww.

Plus, things were going swimmingly between Brett and Kyle Sheffield (returning guest star Teddy Sears). They got coffee together and Brett borrowed him to help her check out an open house for Casey—where they shared their first on-screen kiss. Sorry, Brettonio fans, but she’s definitely moved on.

At work, Brett watched Emily Foster (Annie Ilonzeh) get into more hot water when she found the medical card belonging to a bus driver who’d had a seizure, and told a nurse how the medication was dangerous. The doctor filed a complaint which brought Chief Hatcher to 51 to chastize Foster and threaten her with dismissal.

Foster’s response? To go back to the hospital looking for the doctor, tell the bus driver about her suspicions, and then confront the doctor later after leaving him a half-dozen messages. Gabriela Dawson would be proud. Hatcher came back—but to say that the doctor had informed him that Foster had caught a critical error, and to offer her an apology.

Foster made up with the doctor, who revealed it was actually the nurse who complained, and he complimented her several times. He then asked her out to dinner, so now we know who that new love interest that Annie Ilonzeh mentioned in our interview is. Bet you didn’t see that plot doing a total 180!

Severide

Severide was spending more time working on the businessman’s boat, and he bonded with the man’s son Riley. Riley opened up to Severide, saying that his father was never around and that he didn’t remember his mom.

Dad wasn’t happy about Kelly talking to his son—and then suddenly he wasn’t happy with Severide’s work either and fired him. Apparently every time Jordan Belfi turns up on a One Chicago show, he has to play a jerk. This one’s only slightly better than his role on Chicago Justice.

The next fire call was to Riley’s house, though, leaving Severide in fear for the kid’s life. When the dad returned home and heard Severide’s name, he accused him of intentionally starting the blaze. Kelly found himself under interrogation from multiple detectives (off-screen).

It didn’t get any better for him when the OFI investigation revealed the fire was started by oily rags in the garage, which the detective was quick to suggest were Kelly’s. But Severide knew the truth: that Riley had set the fire, a suspicion that was confirmed when Riley came to the firehouse so he could confess.

Chicago Fire gave us a great psuedo-parent moment as Severide sat Riley down to have a serious talk with him about his behavior. Riley was reunited with his dad, who assured Kelly that his son would get counseling but didn’t even apologize for the false accusation. Is this the last that we’ll see of them?

Stella

Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) announced her breakup with Severide to Firehouse 51, while also coming up with the idea of entering Ritter’s dog Tuesday into a “fire safety dog competition.” That prompted Christopher Herrmann (David Eigenberg) to suggest she was just looking for something to take her mind off the breakup.

But Stella was able to get Tuesday trained—after Ritter revealed the dog’s fondness for peanut butter—and ready for competition. She was also understandably angry when she found out that Severide was being interrogated for a crime he obviously didn’t commit. They may be broken up, but he’s still someone she cared about and still a member of her firehouse.

It was Stella, Mouch (Christian Stolte), Joe Cruz (Joe Minoso) and Otis (Yuri Sardarov) who were responsible for Chicago Fire‘s comic relief this week. Everyone turned up to see Tuesday’s work in the competition, which went badly wrong when the dog saw a girl with peanut butter and jumped on her. An overzealous parent even accused Tuesday of “mauling” the girl, which was the second dumb statement in this episode. So much for winning.

Stella wasn’t too down about it, and went back to work at Molly’s Bar that night. Herrmann, ever the wise man, gave her some more relationship advice by essentially telling her it was okay not to be okay. That prompted her to admit she’s “not completely over it yet, but I will be.” Or will she, as Chicago Fire ended the episode with her watching Severide walk through the bar?
