Chicago PD season 6, episode 13 recap: Night in Chicago
End of the road
Voight decided to leave Atwater hanging in order to preserve his cover, instead deciding to come over and be chummy with the uniforms. Chicago PD had him offer to drive Atwater back to the district, which gave a still-enraged Atwater a chance to unload the emotions he was struggling with.
After bailing Atwater out some time later, Voight cautioned him to calm down but Atwater had reached his breaking point. That led to Kelton’s office, where the Superintendent asked for his explanation of the entire situation. Another of Chicago PD season 6’s political moments ended with an enraged Kelton saying that Atwater could “go down” for the situation, while protesters had already gathered—including Ray Price.
Atwater gave his statement to IRT, while feeling guilty about how he “got an innocent man killed.” That made him incredulous when Voight insisted on seeing the tape of the incident first, pointing out Daryl’s criminal record. He also told Kevin that Kelton wanted to make him the fall guy for not identifying himself as a Chicago PD officer. But, of course, he could get out of the crosshairs by finishing the investigation.

Back undercover, Atwater comforted a devastated Vance before getting Gamble to continue with the drug deal. As soon as the bags changed hands all of Intelligence was on Gamble to arrest him, which only led him to recognize who sold him out—and incorrectly assume that Atwater had set up Daryl to be murdered. That stung Kevin, who ruminated on how they had to catch the bad guys “no matter what it costs.”
With the operation done, Atwater finally watched the tape of Daryl’s shooting. He pointed out to Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) that the video didn’t have audio, so even though Daryl was reaching for the gun, there wasn’t complete context. But then Ray Price himself called Atwater to talk about what Kevin was going to say—because this was about “the future of Chicago” and Ray Price’s plan to run for Mayor.
That only made Atwater more upset, being pulled in two different directions by two people who could not possibly understand him. While Chicago PD didn’t show what he said to the brass, it did reveal that they deemed it a good shooting—when he said it to one of the racist officers before he beat him up, vowing to “get your badge one way or the other.” And he ended the episode putting a gun to the man’s head, so he could experience how it felt.
