Maggie’s risky manuever

When her acquaintance Sydney was brought back into the hospital for a second time, Maggie Lockwood (Marlyne Barrett) was once again concerned. There had been a time lapse, as Maggie said her first appearance was “a couple weeks ago,” but Sydney obviously hadn’t improved.

Test results proved that her dialysis treatments hadn’t been working. She needed a new kidney, but as any longtime viewer knows, the transplant list on Chicago Med is a fickle thing. Attempts to move Sydney up the transplant list were futile since she was a prostitute. So an upset Maggie took drastic measures: she had her blood tested and decided to donate her own kidney.

Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) confronted Maggie about her “misplaced sense of guilt” and the “ethical violation” involved. When Maggie refused to change her mind, Goodwin twisted her arm with administrative rules: she was out of sick leave days, so in order to recover from the surgery, Maggie would have to call out of work and could be fired as a result. Low blow, Sharon.

But Sydney losing consciousness again just made Maggie even more determined. She told her boss that she’d invoke the Family and Medical Leave Act to get the needed time off. And this week’s Chicago Med ended on that note, with Goodwin watching as the procedure got underway. Would it be worth it? Well, we’ll have to wait and see next week.

At least Maggie’s passionate advocacy seemed to have an impact on Goodwin, because she was much nicer when someone else on the staff had to answer for their controversial decision.
