How did this week’s Law and Order SVU season 20 episode do in the TV ratings? Here’s the Feb. 21 edition of the SVU Ratings Report.

With the 20th season of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit season continuing, it’s time for another look at the Dick Wolf series’ TV ratings with the SVU Ratings Report.

Thursday’s installment “Facing Demons,” which was a follow-up of sorts to the season 19 episode “Chasing Demons,” pulled in 3.98 million people who watched live this week.

That’s another decrease in viewers for the show this season, and a sizeable one compared to last week’s 4.16 million (-180,000). It also drops the program under the 4 million mark, which is not a good sign.

When zeroing in on the adults 18-49 demographic that is most coveted by advertisers, this week Special Victims Unit had a 0.9 score; that’s up slightly from the previous 0.8.

What do all those numbers mean in the ongoing big picture? Olivia Benson and company came in ninth among the 16 shows on broadcast TV this Thursday, which is the same place they finished in last week. It’s still not great (in the bottom half) but at least the program’s not sliding down.

SVU also held serve within the demo, because its mark there continued to tie it with CBS‘s sitcom Fam.

Compared to its direct competition in the 10 p.m. time slot the series still has a while to go before it can compete with CBS’s SWAT (at 5.40 million) but remains well ahead of the struggling How To Get Away With Murder on ABC (just 2.58 million).

That’s pretty much where SVU has been all season. It doesn’t seem to be able to put up a fight for that top spot, but all the same, coming in second in its time slot isn’t terrible either. Even with the loss of viewers this week, it was still the most-watched show on NBC behind The Titan Games.

Its chances for season 21 really just depend on if the network is content with a solid, if not stellar, performance or if it wants something in that time slot that’s going to deliver larger ratings in line with the other Dick Wolf franchise.
