Casey and Brett

After being surprised to see Grissom at his front door, Casey’s first call of the episode was almost as weird. He and Truck 81 had to help the police gain entry to a hoarder’s home. But when the cops said the building was clear, it really wasn’t; the presumed suicide was actually a murder, and the perpetrator tackled Casey.

Luckily, the cops came back to help get the gunman off of him, but it was still a rough start to the morning. At least Chicago Fire made a joke about the number of times Casey had nearly been killed. Even so, the incident still left him shaken. Enter Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer), the team’s sort of unofficial morale officer! She called Kyle Sheffield (guest star Teddy Sears), hoping that Kyle would be able to provide a shoulder for Casey to lean on.

Kyle likewise showed up at the loft, but Casey rebuffed him and also sounded annoyed that Brett had told her boyfriend. He thought about calling his ex-wife Gabriela Dawson (Monica Raymund), but Chicago Fire was just teasing us with the promise of a Dawsey moment.

Casey eventually decided the person he’d talk to would be Boden, and admitted that the reason why he was so distraught was that he would’ve been killed except for that the gun had jammed the first time the murderer had tried to fire it. He was desperate to figure out why he had survived. Boden told him that he just had to keep moving.

But the situation also prompted Kyle to pull off a Chicago Fire shocker: he broke up with Brett! He thought their relationship was getting in the way of his job, because people like Casey couldn’t trust him if he was dating one of their co-workers. Though Brett said she understood, she still had a good cry in the hallway.
