Chicago PD’s Hailey Upton and Adam Ruzek were a surprise, so should Upzek stay together or break up in Chicago PD season 6?

Before the One Chicago franchise returns to finish out its season, we’re looking at where the ships and characters stand—including Chicago PD‘s Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) and Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos).

Most people were surprised when Ruzek and Upton became a couple early in Chicago PD season 6, since there wasn’t any indication they’d get together before then. They were a total shock, but that’s also why some fans have started to root for this new relationship.

So should Adam and Hailey keep this developing romance going and perhaps evolve into the show’s new featured couple, or is this just a short-term experiment that’s better off ending by the time the season concludes?

Click through this slideshow to see our arguments for both options, then cast your vote for what Upzek should do in the comments at the end.

Where they are now

Ruzek and Upton’s relationship originally started as a drunken, angsty fling. Upton was freaked out by thinking her partner Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) had been shot and killed at the end of the season’s fall crossover, and Ruzek tried to comfort her by offering her a drink. The next thing audiences saw, the two were getting out of bed together.

Though Upton swore that it was a one-time thing and that she didn’t mix business with pleasure, Chicago PD made it look like she didn’t actually mean what she said. Not even close, as by the end of the same episode, the two were hooking up again. They’ve been a couple ever since, with Ruzek even talking about them moving in together during the midseason finale (though they didn’t take it that far).

But the show has gotten a lot of mileage out of Upzek, from Ruzek protecting Upton from being shot to comforting her after she revealed that she’d been abused when she was younger. And, of course, there was all the drama that came out of Ruzek’s former fiancee Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) discovering the relationship.

While Burgess and Upton appeared to make up following their harrowing abduction a few weeks ago, Burgess and Ruzek haven’t talked about this (and they may not). At least, he seems to be just fine with his new girlfriend, and he doesn’t know that Burgess has moved on now, too.
