Chicago Fire’s Severide and Stella: Should they stay or split?
Why they should stay together
The one thing that’s certain about Severide and Stella’s dynamic is that they care fiercely about one another, no matter what permutation their relationship is in. Chicago Fire would have a huge uphill battle to convince One Chicago viewers that any other love interest had the same kind of emotional investment that these two have in each other.
Neither of them needs to go back into the dating pool, either. Stella’s other romantic storylines on the show have been awkward at best; remember when she turned into a teenage girl over Zach in his first episode? And nobody wants to see Severide turn back into the guy who sleeps with every woman in a ten-mile radius and learns nothing. That’s one of the show’s most played out aspects.
And it’s hard not to think that’s what would happen if Stellaride stayed apart. Chicago Fire already showed Severide having another one night stand post-breakup. Heck, even after Anna died and he was so distraught over it, he was said to have been comforted by half the women in Chicago! So if he’s not with Stella, he turns into someone fans are getting tired of.
Plus, the problems with their relationship are in large part writing-related. They need new stories, or at least, new challenges that don’t involve jealousy or another near-death experience. If they’re able to actually grow and mature (both in the ship and individually), this could be the pairing that fills the void left behind by Dawsey. But it has to get there first.
