A hostage situation

Drew admitted to knowing Darius; he had taught him how to shoot, because Darius had wanted to join the Army. But the Army had rejected him because of his criminal record, and Drew hadn’t seen him since.

So Voight went to see Darius’s mom, who was likewise angry about what happened to her son but agreed to cooperate. She showed the cops her computer, on which Darius had researched each of the people he’d targeted—and a fourth person, the man who’d supervised him while he was in the juvenile correction facility, who he was trying to kill at that very minute.

But Chicago PD mixed things up: Darius had missed his intended target and he’d taken hostages instead. He was surprised to hear Voight on the other end of the phone, and agreed to hear him out for five minutes. That was five minutes more than the magically appearing Kelton wanted to give him.

Darius ranted at Voight about all the grief he’d suffered because his supervisor in juvenile hall told everyone he was a snitch—a claim that the supervisor didn’t deny. Voight tried to position himself so that he’d keep Darius away from the window and unable to be shot by the SWAT cops Kelton had brought along, while Darius agreed to release two of the three hostages.

But in true Chicago PD fashion, “Pain Killer” had a twist ending. The third hostage panicked and ran, causing Darius to panic too and pick the gun back up again. He apologized to his mom before making a move, which allowed the SWAT team to shoot and kill him instantly under the pretense that he might have been trying to shoot Voight.

That night, Halstead came to Voight with evidence that backed up Darius’ story about his supervisor, allowing Intelligence to build a case against that man. Voight admitted to Halstead that he felt like he owed Darius, and rued the state of the juvenile justice system before trying to pay a visit to the young man’s mother. Just as in Chicago PD season 4’s “Grasping for Salvation” he got a very cold reception.
