Severide and Cruz

Cruz found out that there was more to the plot from the last One Chicago crossover; Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) from Chicago PD was visiting Firehouse 51 to give him a special commendation for his work. Cruz kept this information to himself for about ten seconds.

But his swagger was short-lived when Severide accused him of showing off by using the Slamigan at the house fire, instead of the traditional tool that he’d been asked for. Severide pointed out a detail that Cruz had missed; there were different bolts on the door, so Cruz’s big save that he was so proud of had just been dumb luck.

Halstead did show up later in the episode, handing Cruz the commendation letter and telling him there’d be a ceremony in his honor. But now feeling insecure, Cruz told everybody else it was just notice of overdue parking tickets. Because Intelligence totally keeps on top of those.

He seemed to have learned his lesson when everyone went to rescue a man who’d fallen through a sidewalk grate; now Cruz was worrying over every little detail. Brett tried to cheer him up, telling him she was proud of him. But it was Severide coming to the commendation ceremony, and giving a very flattering speech, that gave Cruz his confidence back.

Chicago Fire ended “No Such Thing As Bad Luck” with Severide giving Cruz his commendation, and a hug to go with it. Their bromance was restored, much to the delight of Brett, who was sitting in the audience. Now the only question is whether or not Cruz will eventually tell everyone else what he just received, or if that’s forever going to remain between the three of them.
