2. He’s the strongest character

Connor Rhodes is the strongest character on Chicago Med. In a number of different ways, there’s no one stronger than him, and losing him means that the series is going to suffer for it.

From an acting standpoint, Colin Donnell is a tremendous actor. He’s one of the biggest reasons to watch Chicago Med. He consistently delivers good performances week after week, even when the storyline he has isn’t the best. He isn’t only talented dramatically, but he’s great when he’s able to do something comedically. We weren’t kidding when we said there should be a camera specifically to capture his facial expressions; the way he reacts to things can steal a scene. It’s going to hurt to lose an actor of his caliber.

Beyond that, though, the character of Connor has incredible strength and poise. He’s the guy who will take the fight farther than anybody else and really doesn’t care what it costs him; that’s part of his appeal.

This is the character who was prepared to sue the hospital in the second season when he thought that Robin Charles (Mekia Cox) wasn’t getting treated well. This is the one who has butted heads with Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) more than anybody else, and doesn’t really care that she’s his boss. This is the guy who took care of it when someone tried to scam Dr. Isidore Latham (Ato Essandoh).

This is the dude who punched his father at a gala—in an impulsive moment, but still, could you imagine any of the other characters doing that? Connor has a hero complex, plus he has the talent and the financial security to be able to go out on a limb, and those two things have made him a real tough customer.

That’s important, because it lends a certain weight to the series. Every medical drama wants to be about doctors who are willing to fight for their patients, but very few characters on those shows actually feel like that’s the case. Connor Rhodes is one of those characters. This is someone that you’d want to go into battle with, and if you were his patient, you feel like he’d fight for you. Even at his own expense.
