Chicago Med dealt with a hostage situation and upset fathers in Never Let You Go. Find out what happened in our Chicago Med season 4, episode 19 recap.

This week’s Chicago Med was further evidence that this must be the most chaotic hospital ever, even by TV standards.

Wednesday’s installment, “Never Let You Go,” involved a teenage father who snapped when he realized his girlfriend had given their child up for adoption. He took hostages in the Emergency Department wanting the happy ending he wasn’t going to get, but in true One Chicago fashion, that had depressing consequences.

Meanwhile, Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell) learned that his father Cornelius (recurring guest star D.W. Moffett) had a heart condition. Naturally, the two butted heads when it came to taking care of the issue, because they can never agree on anything.

Teenage pregnancy gone wrong

The Emergency Department at Chicago Med has become an awkward and sometimes dangerous place to be, and that continues this week, where Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) has to hear about his ex-girlfriend trying new things with her new boyfriend. Luckily, it’s a short talk before Natalie is pulled away to look at a young pregnant woman named Lily.

Apparently, Lily’s car accident just accidentally induced labor. Oh, and the baby’s dad David has somehow found out where she is, and begs her to keep the kid. When Lily tells him she’s already planned on giving the baby up for adoption, an enraged David has to be forcibly removed from the ED.

Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) comes down to speak with him, and explains that since Lily said on the adoption papers she doesn’t know who the child’s father is, he doesn’t have any legal rights. She’s willing to recommend a lawyer for him so he can contest that. But that’s all she can do, so he leaves the hospital in a huff. It’s not hard to figure out that he’ll be back.

While she deals with that, Cornelius Rhodes is still ranting about the state of the hospital. Connor happens to be walking by when his dad nearly collapses, and decides that he’s taking Cornelius downstairs for an examination—whether he wants one or not.

This does not go unnoticed by Dr. Ava Bekker (Norma Kuhling), who chastizes him for treating a family member. And Cornelius notices Ava, but Connor ignores both of them to discuss the heart murmur that his dad has apparently been ignoring for a while now. A frustrated Connor agrees to discharge his father.

In another room Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) is treating a kid named Joshua, but his sister shows up with her kid, just to remind Chicago Med fans that Emily is back now. And then David somehow gets back into the ED with a gun. Lily’s dad tries to wrestle it away from him and is shot instead, along with a security guard. David takes the woman who was going to adopt Lily’s baby hostage, not knowing who she is, while Connor pulls his father back into a treatment room before coming out to jump into action, like usual.

David orders Maggie Lockwood (Marlyne Barrett) to lock the doors leading into the ED, and Will to cover the doors and windows so that no one can see inside. Goodwin arrives just in time to see absolutely nothing. You’d think for as many times as a crisis has happened here, she’d be used to things like this.
