Chicago PD upended its season-long storyline in What Could Have Been. Find out what happened in our Chicago PD season 6, episode 19 recap.

The latest Chicago PD gave One Chicago fans the break in the mayoral election story that they’ve been waiting for—but almost certainly not in the way that they wanted.

Wednesday’s episode “What Could Have Been” dealt with the murder of Kim Burgess’s (Marina Squerciati) boyfriend Blair Williams, originally suggesting that he was killed over his involvement in drugs. But while something negative did come out about Blair, what actually happened was a lot less sordid.

Naturally, it connected back to the fact that he was working for Superintendent Brian Kelton (an unseen John C. McGinley). And who actually murdered Blair was one of the genuine shocks in this Chicago PD season 6.

Blair’s checkered past

Burgess is sitting forlorn at a bar, thinking that Blair has stood her up for their latest date. Upset with him, she calls her ex-partner Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) to ask for a favor: can he help her find her boyfriend?

With Atwater’s help, Burgess tracks down Blair’s car but he’s not in it. She calls him again, and hears his phone ring nearby—which enables her to find him near death in the middle of nowhere. He didn’t stand her up, but paramedics and the rest of Intelligence get there seemingly in time.

So does Katherine Brennan (Anne Heche), since Blair was working for her boss. Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) reminds her to play nice, before discovering that there’s somewhere around $20,000 at the scene. Oh, and Blair’s died in the last 60 seconds, because Chicago PD always goes for the sad option.

The next day Atwater comes by Burgess’s apartment to check on her. More Burgess and Atwater scenes are always welcome, but this one involves her saying that she was going to dump Blair anyway so she just wants to work the case. Well, okay then.

They head to the district, where Intelligence is running down the particulars of Blair’s life. Voight thinks this is a drug-related homicide, especially since he was busted as a teenager for having cocaine on him. Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) also points out that Blair had set up a meeting at a bar known for moving drugs.

The bartender recognizes Blair from a photo, saying that he met someone to talk about money. A nearby camera confirms he was there and gives the team a license plate of a car registered to a local church. Ruzek also takes this opportunity to offer Burgess a shoulder to lean on, but she says nothing in return.
