Will and Phillip

This Chicago Med episode began with an awkward moment where Will was formally introduced to his ex-fiancee’s new boyfriend Phillip, who was watching Natalie’s son Owen while Natalie went for coffee. Poor Will had to explain to Owen why they couldn’t play together.

Will was also suspicious about Phillip mentioning that he owned a cattle ranch in Texas, and started asking Natalie more about her new squeeze. Of course that ended up being a mistake, because Will got tetchy about how Natalie was letting Phillip spend time around Owen so quickly. Well, he wasn’t wrong.

He was pulled away from the potential argument to treat a patient who didn’t speak English, and whose cousin insisted on being his translator. This was one of Chicago Med‘s classic “more than meets the eye” moments, because the cousin was more concerned about the kidney he was supposed to get than his actual relative in the hospital bed and was ready to leave as quickly as possible.

Will stepped in by convincing the cousin to stay for some extra lab work, but Gwen Garrett (recurring guest star Heather Headley) then popped down to say that the man was now a VIP at Chicago Med and his personal doctor was going to take over the case. Anything to land a profitable procedure, right?

Will insisted that something was fishy, and asked Maggie Lockwood (Marlyne Barrett) to help him stall by ordering an additional test, before telling Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) he was sure this was an illegal transplant. Goodwin, of course, was only concerned with if the paperwork checked out.

So Will went directly to his patient to find out the truth, but Chicago Med threw in another curveball by proving him wrong. The patient produced a photo that proved he and his cousin really were related; his cousin just happened to be a massive jerk. Except when speaking about how they met and bonded over soccer. A chagrined Will let the two relatives hug it out.

He also reconnected with Phillip, who changed his story and said he didn’t actually own a ranch—he was just playing with Owen. Will’s radar went off again at that.
