Choi and Bernie, Connor and Ava

Chicago Med had more of the same in its subplots. Choi’s sister Emily (recurring guest star Arden Cho) brought her boyfriend Bernie back into the ED with stomach issues. Choi was nonplussed to hear that Emily and Bernie were getting an apartment, even though Bernie refused to speak about his wife.

April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta) advised Choi to stay out of the Bernie of it all and just focus on the treatment. But that didn’t last long, as Choi finally exploded on Bernie about getting things together for Emily and their baby. Bernie still had nothing to say, though, and glared at Choi as if this was somehow personally offensive.

Emily, too, got angry at her brother for “kicking him when he’s down.” So while Bernie’s surgery was a success, Emily talked about how “delicate” her boyfriend was and how Choi should get out of their lives if he couldn’t handle that.

Choi apologized to Bernie, who claimed he was going to change but then asked him for a prescription for erectile dysfunction in the same conversation! Okay, way to end that subplot on an awkward note, Chicago Med.

Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell) was still having problems with his dad Cornelius (recurring guest star D.W. Moffett) following his scare the previous week. Did his surgery not actually fix his heart condition? Could Ava have ruined that too?

Connor confronted Ava (Norma Kuhling) when X-rays proved that Cornelius needed another surgery. Ava accused him of “losing your mind,” despite the fact that the proof was right there on the screen.

It was Dr. Isidore Latham (recurring guest star Ato Essandoh) to the rescue! Although Latham told Connor that it was a faulty patch, not Ava’s malice, that caused his father’s problem. Cornelius chewed out Gwen for the terrible quality of the hospital’s equipment and warned that her contract as Chicago Med’s COO might not be renewed.

Connor made a point of apologizing to Ava, who demanded he also apologize for everything else that she still isn’t officially innocent of yet. She admitted that their breakup “devastated” her and she was still getting over it, but asked him why he wanted to hurt her. Um, what now?

Luckily, Chicago Med didn’t actually have him answer that question, because that was almost as awkward as the erectile dysfunction line.
