Chicago PD shook up the Intelligence Unit’s status quo in Sacrifice. Find out what happened in our Chicago PD season 6, episode 20 recap.

This week’s Chicago PD told a story about a tormented relationship, as a way of shining a harsh spotlight on the show’s central relationship.

Wednesday’s installment “Sacrifice” involved Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) and Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) taking the lead on a string of drug robberies, which were traced back to a couple facing a terrible decision. By the time the episode ended, Ruzek and Upton also made a choice for themselves.

Meanwhile, Deputy Superintendent Katherine Brennan (recurring guest star Anne Heche) came back into the picture with surprising results.

Robbery in progress

Chicago PD opened “Sacrifice” with Ruzek and Upton having spent another night together, talking about spending the weekend with his uncle, and leaving for work. But they got an armed robbery call just a few blocks away, changing their schedule.

Upton and Ruzek were nearly shot by one of the robbers as they got away, although at least the man they’d robbed told them what was stolen: a pill delivery for a local pharmacy. According to Upton’s partner Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer), this was the third such robbery in recent memory, and all three vans were owned by the same company: Venture Shipping.

With “inside job” quickly taken off the table, Intelligence began to look at outside suspects. Their getaway van had been parked near a drug house connected to the Night Lords gang, so Antonio Dawson (Jon Seda) did his usual thing and found out the Night Lords had a lot of painkillers on their hands now. Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) asked him to set up a sting, but admitted he didn’t trust Antonio around drugs and told him to take Ruzek with him.

Ruzek met the Night Lords operator posing as a deal and struck up a sale, while Brennan walked into Voight’s office to ask why he wasn’t moving faster on a case that his team had literally just started working. She told him to make peace with her boss, but hearing that Ruzek had a deal in place seemed to pacify her…for now.

Chicago PD cut to Ruzek attempting to make his drug deal, but being outnumbered because their target had brought two of his henchmen along with him, and they were armed. Not only that, but they expected him to get into the car with him. Just as Ruzek had seemed to calm the situation down, a random patrol car rolled down the street and blew up the whole thing!
