Chicago PD season 6, episode 20 recap: Sacrifice
The breakup
Gina went to snitch on family, but wound up having a bit of a meltdown while Upton and Ruzek looked on. At least she got their target to admit he killed the pharmacist. But he then promptly tried to attack Gina, so the duo once again took the lead and nearly got shot for the second time this week. Upton, however, got a piece of broken glass impaled in her leg…and told Ruzek to yank it out rather than wait for an ambulance.
That’s because since their target had only seen Ruzek, Upton thought she could sneak around and catch him by surprise. While Ruzek held down the fort, Upton used a broom as a distraction, allowing her to save Gina and Halstead to get control of the gun. Teamwork at its finest on Chicago PD!
“Sacrifice” wound down with Upton assuring Voight that all the drugs had been located, Ruzek telling Gina not to blame herself, and Brennan sticking her nose in afterward—but for a good cause. Chicago PD implied she’d made sure the meds went to the right place, and Voight told her that she was better than Kelton, but she didn’t answer.
The show provided Platt her first lines of the episode when she asked Upton about her relationship with Ruzek. Platt gave her a piece of advice: “If Adam’s the one, then make it work. But that probably means that one of you has to get out of Intelligence.” Of course, if that were to actually happen, Chicago PD would lose a cast member and it’s already doing that.
Upton pondered Platt’s warning that if neither she nor her boyfriend were willing to sacrifice their career for their relationship, then the relationship wasn’t worth it. When Ruzek found her afterward, she wanted to talk—and the two used as few words as possible to break up. It’s not like Ruzek has great luck with inter-departmental relationships or anything.
But at least Chicago PD had them hug it out at the end of the episode. And who else thinks One Chicago fans haven’t seen the last of them as a couple?
