Chicago PD season 6, episode 21 recap: Confession
Brennan’s big mistake
Antonio met his union lawyer to ask him about a hypothetical situation—and if his addiction would have an effect on the case if it was exposed. “Would it be possible for this officer to take full responsibility for his actions after the fact?” he asked. But of course, it wasn’t. His lawyer told him all three of them would be fired and he’d end up in jail. Hypothetically.
Chicago PD let that sink in over the commercial break, before Ruzek told Voight that the detective they were looking for was booked onto a flight out of Chicago. They got to his place just as he was preparing to skip town. He wasn’t interested in turning on Kelton. But when Voight read him the list of all the people the serial killer murdered, then called Katherine Bradley and handed him the phone, the other man took it.
While he was off doing that, Alex’s lawyer had gotten him released early, and he had a confrontation with Antonio in the lobby before walking right past Hugo’s mom. She told Antonio that a man had come to her house with money to pay for Hugo’s funeral, and when he showed her a photo, she identified the man as Carlos.
Antonio went back downstairs and gave Carlos a lecture about guilt. But Carlos finally explained why he wouldn’t talk: Alex had also threatened his brother. “Would you save your soul if it meant hurting the people you love?” he asked, and Chicago PD showed a speechless Antonio before cutting to Voight and Ruzek looking on. Pot calling the kettle black, indeed.
Assured that his brother would be protected, Carlos began to talk, saying that Alex was the one who used his office and that the plan had just been to teach Hugo a lesson. “He never said anything about killing anybody,” he said, while Alex had left two hours earlier. Voight ordered both him and Carlos’s brother to be found—but the former had already “picked up” the latter.
No surprise here: Carlos’s brother was found dead in the trunk of Alex’s car, with no sign of Alex. Ruzek quickly spotted Alex trying to stroll away, and a chase ensued. “Confession” soon had Antonio separated from Ruzek as he chased Alex to a rooftop. The other man had lost his gun tripping earlier, so Ruzek came upon Antonio holding an unarmed Alex at gunpoint. Antonio thought about pushing him off the roof, but ultimately relented and handcuffed him instead.
Ruzek also told Antonio that with the detective’s testimony, the story exposing Kelton was being published, getting the proverbial monkey off Antonio’s back. By the end of the night, Brennan was calling a press conference—but it was only to martyr herself. She told reporters that she was the one behind the cover-up, and had already turned in her resignation.
Needless to say, Voight wanted an explanation. Chicago PD found her drinking at a bar, and she told him he was the only person who had come to see her. After all this time, Kelton had turned on her. “He was keeping evidence against me,” she admitted. “I was playing checkers. He was playing chess.”
“Why not take him down with you?” Voight asked. Why, to save herself from being prosecuted for all the stuff she’d done, of course! Brennan once again told him to worry about himself, repeating that Kelton was coming after him for about the tenth time in Chicago PD season 6.
