5. Voight (presumably) kills Kelton

It probably didn’t surprise Chicago PD fans at all that Intelligence had to resort to illegal means to get rid of Superintendent Brian Kelton (recurring guest star John C. McGinley). The season painted itself into that corner by only introducing two mayoral candidates—Kelton and Alderman Ray Price (Wendell Pierce)—and then writing one of them out by having Price jailed for murders that his wife committed.

There was nowhere else to go. On top of that, the show has established that this is how it solves problems; characters are more likely to operate outside the law than within it. Especially if you’re Hank Voight (Jason Beghe). So to see Kelton’s dead body in his foyer, followed by a shot of Voight driving away, wasn’t the huge shock Chicago PD likely wanted it to be.

The shock comes from trying to figure out how the show is going to get out of this when season 7 begins. There’s obviously going to be an investigation into Kelton’s murder. Will Voight somehow be able to cover this up like he’s done several times in the past? That would ensure the show is able to keep going, but it would also feel pretty tired by now.

There’s also a theory among some One Chicago viewers that Antonio Dawson (Jon Seda) got to Kelton first and is the real killer, which makes less sense but would provide an explanation for his departure that wasn’t in the episode. Chicago PD has dug itself a big hole by killing Kelton and like its characters, has a bit of a climb to get out.
