4. Chicago Med’s health reveals

The Chicago Med season finale dropped in two big revelations about characters’ health, and to call them surprises would be an understatement. Maggie Lockwood (Marlyne Barrett) has a breast cancer issue after learning that the kidney she donated earlier this season had a tumor on it. Um, what?

But while fans are worried about Maggie, the even bigger WTF scene happened when April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta) told her once again boyfriend Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) that she had missed her period. Chicago Med season 5 could see a Chexton baby—and that’s a real head-scratcher when looking at all the context that’s come before.

April already had a pregnancy storyline, and a very poignant one, when she was expecting with her ex-fiance Tate (Deron J. Powell) and lost their child. The writers have already gone down this road with her, and doing it again not only feels repetitive, it feels like it takes away from that earlier plot.

That’s because this plotline doesn’t add anything to the show. If Chicago Med showed anything by dragging out the storyline with Ethan’s sister Emily (Arden Cho), a baby plot can really slow down the show, if the kid isn’t largely ignored (see: Owen Manning). Plus, April and Choi have just gotten back together—why do they need a plot twist already?

So after doing such an important pregnancy storyline with April, now it feels like the writers are just throwing in another possibility for shock value. The same goes for Maggie’s reveal. They come off as surprises just to have a few more surprises going into next season.
