What went wrong: Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) was arrested because he took the blame for the drug dealer Antonio Dawson (Jon Seda) killed at midseason. Desperate to stop Brian Kelton (recurring guest star John C. McGinley) before the other man could start his reign as mayor, Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) apparently drove to Kelton’s house and murdered him.

How bad is it: This may sound blase, but this season finale was basically like another day in the Chicago PD world. Voight does terrible things, including either aiding or committing murder, all the time—and One Chicago viewers had to expect that something would befall Kelton that’d keep him from becoming mayor. After all, if he had, he’d have disbanded Intelligence and then again, there’d be no show to watch next season.

There is a small chance Voight isn’t the killer, but that’s slim considering the episode ended with him driving away someplace after he specifically said he was going to see Kelton—the writers set that up to imply something pretty specific.

The bigger issue is how to get Ruzek out from behind bars. Everyone knows that he’s now facing a murder charge for a crime he didn’t commit, but the only person who can prove that is Antonio, so this could be how Jon Seda’s character is written out (given that he didn’t actually leave during this episode).

If the writers want to lean into what they’ve created, season 7 could be very interesting for the Chicago PD universe. Killing a mayor-elect is a whole scandal, and who will be the mayor now that Kelton’s dead? Will that person have any effect on the team? Will Antonio’s absence mean that no one opposes Voight’s way of doing things? There’s a lot that could be played with.

However, we also said that about season 6 when it was supposed to be more timely about what it meant to be a cop in Chicago—and the show didn’t really deliver much on that count. So it’s also a possibility that the writers just find a way to get Voight and Ruzek off the hook, and move on. Of the three shows, this is the one to worry the least about, even though it’s the only one on which someone is actually confirmed dead.
