Connor Rhodes

Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell) was as much a part of Chicago Med as anyone. He was the first character audiences met in the series premiere back in 2015, when the train he was commuting on crashed spectacularly. Since that episode, he’s been a fan favorite and one of the show’s best characters, which is what made it so shocking that he was leaving.

At least he’ll get a break now, though, because Chicago Med season 4 was absolutely brutal for our favorite cardiothoracic surgeon turned trauma surgeon. He almost left for a job at the Mayo Clinic, but was persuaded to stay when he got to build a hybrid OR in the Emergency Department. Then Connor found out how it was funded, and everything spun out of control from there, mostly because of Ava.

Ava undermined Connor at work, seemingly injured herself during a surgery to get sympathy out of him, and was so jealous of his ex-girlfriend Robin Charles that she might have staged her fake kidnapping. What Connor does know she did is murder his father by giving him a fatal amount of insulin, because she told him that she killed Cornelius so that they could get back together.

A shocked Connor shot down that idea fast, but aside from his “I can’t believe this” stare after her, Chicago Med fans didn’t get to see his reaction to finally finding out that Ava was crazy. Nor did he actually leave the hospital in the episode, so the writers have some explaining to do when he’s not seen in the season 5 premiere.

Off-screen, Colin Donnell was also let go from the series as part of the “creative decision” that saw Norma Kuhling dropped, too. It’s unfortunate, because he leaves a huge hole in the show that can never quite be filled.
